Legend of the Library:
Dispelling an Urban Myth.

There's a cautionary tale about an architect who once built a library and forgot to account for the weight of the books. As a result, the library sank. It's a popular myth that circulates around college campuses every year as students return to school and head back to the library for after-school activities and all-night cram sessions.

Despite widespread circulation of the legend since the 1970s, no architect has ever forgotten to account for the weight of a library's holdings. The story does, however, serve as a valuable lesson to always take into account a building's functionality and purpose.

At HBL Architects, we've built several libraries with the goal of enhancing the quality of life in the surrounding community by increasing educational opportunities, creating a meeting space for residents and providing a safe place for children to go after school. We incorporate the community's feedback to include offices, meeting rooms, work and study areas, adequate space for books and more. And we never forget to account for the weight of the books.

Let us help you build more than a building. Build a landmark. Build a legacy. Call HBL Architects today at 713.621.7581 or visit hbl-architects.com.

Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd
Friendswood, Texas

Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, a growing parish in the rapidly growing suburban community of Friendswood, Texas, had reached the capacity and useful life of its existing worship space. The Good Shepherd School for pre-K through first grade students was also nearing capacity.

HBL Architects prepared a Master Plan to expand the existing campus by 35,400 square feet and to be built in two or more phases. The first phase, constructed in 2003, completely remodeled the existing worship space, turning it 180 degrees so that the added chancel would face east and the added narthex would open off a newly created courtyard connecting to the existing Parish Hall. A new chapel and choir practice space were also added. As a result of this remodeling, the parish has been able to easily accommodate the 50% parish growth that followed.
A Little-Known Fact:
Music to Our Ears!

How do you get to the upper floors of this building? Take the escalator in the violin, of course! The Piano House in China was built by the government to attract visitors and stimulate the local economy.
