Katy Family YMCA
Katy, Texas
By the mid ‘90s it had become evident that the existing YMCA facilities on the west side of greater Houston would no longer satisfy the growing population of the area. A long-range planning study conducted in 1996 pinpointed a strong demand for a family recreation center in the Katy area near the intersection of I-10 and the Grand Parkway. Responding to the demand, the developers of Cinco Ranch, one of the major new developments in the area, donated two adjacent parcels of land to the YMCA of Greater Houston for a Family YMCA. HBL Architects was commissioned to develop a Master Plan for a building on one of the two parcels. This three-acre-site, at the intersection of two of the area’s major thoroughfares, Westheimer Parkway and Peek Road, was adjacent to a new elementary school, which shared some facilities with the YMCA. The Master Plan called for a 61,800-square-foot building, to be built in two phases, and two swimming pools. The Phase I building program included a 37,000-square-foot building, an outdoor recreation pool and parking lots. This also included a gymnasium with fitness and aerobics rooms, locker rooms, multipurpose rooms for community use, and administrative offices. The second phase will include 18,300 square feet of fitness facilities and a 6,500-square-foot indoor lap pool.
