La Porte Public Library
La Porte, Texas
The La Porte Public Library sought to enhance quality of life in the city by increasing the educational level of the community, serving as a meeting/gathering space for all segments of the population, providing a place for children to go to after school and summer programs, and allow access to the Internet. The design for this 23,357-square-foot library included space for adult, youth and children’s books, as well as offices, work areas, study areas and a community meeting room. Located across the street from an elementary school, the library included a separate children's entrance for after-school activities. Thirty computers were installed to provide public access to the Internet and "HARRY," the library technology system. The Library was designed to ultimately house approximately 100,000 to 120,000 traditional library materials including books, compact discs, videocassettes, books on tape, magazines, newspapers, and more than 30 computers for public use. Seating for more than 100 was provided at tables, carrels and computer stations. The additions included a popular materials center, formal education support center and reference library.
